Best Ways To Save Money - Article

A Few of the Best Ways to Save Money

Author: J. Snyder

In today's financial climate it can get very hard to find a little extra money to put away for that rainy day. I did not say that it was impossible just kinda hard to be able to build up the emergency fund when it seems that every day is an emergency. Here are three of the best ways to save money even when money is tight.

Save Your Change

Set up a change jar. I have mine set up at the kitchen counter by our back door where I always empty my pockets. I throw my keys on the counter next to my wallet and I plug in my cell phone and throw all my change (every day) into my jar. Twice a month I empty my jar and take it to the bank sometimes there is only two or three dollars in it and sometimes five or six. It is amazing how fast it adds up. At approximately $8.00 each month it comes to $96 a year. Not a fortune but better than a sharp stick in the eye.

Save Coupons and Use Them

Start to clip coupons or better and easier, just print them off your computer for the brands you use. It is amazing how much you can save on your monthly grocery bills if you just do a little work at it. Of course if you are going to save then the money you do not spend you must put into your savings account. What we have done is set our bi-weekly food budget for the amount we spend to eat each payday. Then we clip coupons and look for deals while shopping so we do not spend our entire budgeted food allowance. Depending on the coupons we find for the two week period we can save $10 to $20 each time which adds up to an average of $30 per month totaling $360 per year. Again not a fortune but $360 plus the $96 comes to $456 each year.

Pay Yourself First

This is a must if you are ever going to build up your emergency fund. Just put yourself in the budget and pay yourself every payday the same as you would pay your electric or phone bills or any other creditor. Make sure that you drop it into your savings account right away or you will spend it on something you really do not need. If you pay yourself only 10% of every payday it will add up fast. Say you bring home $400 per week 10% is $40 times 52 weeks totals $2080 per year. At only 5% it would total $1040 per year.

As you can see just these three of the best ways to save money can put a sizable sum into your emergency fund in as little as a year. Add seven more ways to save and look out world here we come.

Las Vegas NV Coupons - Article

Coupons are available for Las Vegas gambling, dining (buffets, restaurants, fast-food), shows, attractions, spa treatments, drinks, car rental, nightclub cover charges, and transportation. Pick a legal Vegas activity and you can likely obtain a coupon for it. As expected, often the best coupon sources (defined as overall value) require varying yet modest levels of investment. If one performs a Google search for Las Vegas coupons they will be inundated with sources that may or may not provide legitimate coupon sources or coupons. Some of these search results will direct to sites that only offer hotel promo codes for room rates. These can still be worthwhile or potentially valuable but there might not be one coupon per se offered on the entire site.

The following outlines general coupon tips, sources for free coupons (some downloadable / self-printable), and sources for purchasable coupons for use in Vegas.
General Las Vegas coupon tips:

- Make certain of exactly what you're getting when obtaining coupons; specific property for redemption, denominations, specific uses, and length of time they're valid.
- Check expiration dates; There's some internet sites that are still offering Las Vegas coupons that expired in 2005.

- Plan and acquire as many selected coupons as possible before your trip (both "free" or purchased coupons) because this allows for more efficient planning and organization. Allow at least two weeks if workable for your situation. Follow up on all initial orders with e- mail / calls through available source contacts.

- After receiving the coupons, organize them with a system that allows for efficient visual ID and access; one system is to make a master list of all coupons that outlines specific property and specific coupon uses. Subsequently, place all coupons for a specific property / property group in a legal size envelope labeled for that property and specific coupons for redemption there. This simple coupon organization allows for quick and easy visual access. Also, consider alphabetizing these envelopes by property and securing with a large rubber band if you accumulate a large number of coupons. Note that some bulk coupon sources require that coupons are NOT to be removed from printed booklets until at time / locale of redemption; don't cut them out if you're directed not to as they won't be valid / redeemable!

- Multiple coupons from the same source are just another means to accrue further cost savings. Visitors have to plan and use common sense to redeem more than one identical coupon at the same locale. Many coupons have restrictions for use such as one coupon per customer per year. Use of family members and purchasing bulk coupons under another name are excellent means to get around this restriction. For gambling coupons, just be savvy enough to not attempt to redeem more than one identical coupon at the same table with the same dealer or pit crew. Just wait until a shift / personnel change occurs.

- Select coupon sources / coupons that best cover the activities you enjoy most.
- Note that very few coupons are available from the upper tier, "high-roller' properties or upper end shows and that many coupons are offered from off-strip locales. Offering coupons are a means for those casinos with less kitsch or demand to attract patrons and thereby compete with the big dogs. The current economic downturn in Vegas may change this traditional element regarding coupons and whom they are offered by. There is already a slight trend in this direction.

- Player's club members or visitors who have signed up for casino e-mail lists are in a good position to receive coupons attached to great room comp offers; this trend is already occurring.
The following are sources for either free printed or downloadable Las Vegas coupons. Note that many of the free coupons from these sources are available in many casino-hotel lobbies, rooms, or taxicabs after you arrive but there is an advantage to obtaining these prior to the trip as previously discussed regarding trip planning and organization of obtained coupons. Be advised that a few of the following sources require a subscription fee (single issue or annual) to obtain the so-called "free" coupons. These magazines do provide an additional Las Vegas info source, however.

Free or downloadable Las Vegas coupon sources / coupons :

- What's On Magazine; A large volume free coupon source. They have a page within their website that allows downloading and printing of free Vegas coupons. The website is being updated as I write this and is not functional presently (I assume they're renewing their 2009 coupon sources and will be available soon). Subscriptions for the magazine are available and you can obtain coupons from monthly issues (for a fee, of course).

- 24/7 Magazine; They offer many second-tier show 2 -for-1 discount coupons and tour discount coupons. There's a plethora of advertisements and assorted abbreviated guides for Las Vegas shows, buffets, gaming, etc. This source also publishes Vegas Values below.
- Vegas Values; This coupon booklet is actually the true coupon book offered from 24/7 magazine above. Visitors can obtain a free current copy of Vegas Values by sending an e-mail on the above 24/7 subscription page online.

- Las Vegas Leisure Guide ; This source has downloadable discount coupons from their site. As of this writing, this source is also in the process of updating / renewing their coupon site and the site states that it will be completed and functional in 1 - 2 weeks.
- Las Vegas Insider; There's a very limited listing of downloadable coupons presently ( they may be updating as well but there's no such reference online). There is a link to the purchasable "Casino Perks" source listed below on this site.

- Vegas 4 Locals; This is a downloadable / printable free coupon source. This source is particularly strong for mid and low tier show coupon discounts but lacking in gambling coupons.
- Las Vegas Funbook; Most if not all of the free coupons here can be obtained from previously mentioned locales once in Vegas. The kicker here is that they charge $19.95 for shipping and handling if you want to obtain and organize them at home prior to the trip.

- Today In Las Vegas Magazine; This source offers printable free coupons including one for $5 off on a fully automatic machine gun rental. There are some more common coupons as well.
- Las Vegas major local newspapers, the Las Vegas Review Journal and Las Vegas Sun; At times these newspapers have free coupons or promotions and the Friday "Neon" section of The Review Journal is particularly noted for these.

The following depicts Las Vegas coupon sources / coupons that can be purchased for varying amounts.
Purchasable Las Vegas Coupons:

- Las Vegas Advisor (LVA); If you purchase one single coupon source for Las Vegas, this is our recommended site. You're required to become an LVA member and there's 2 options. A full membership costs $50.00 and you receive the Members Rewards Book (formerly Pocketbook of Values), a monthly printed newsletter via mail, and full online access to their site. An online membership costs $37.00 and you receive everything but the printed newsletter item (but you can access it online). There's an expansive amount of current and updated Las Vegas info such as news, forums, polls, guides (gaming, hotel - casinos, buffets, wedding chapels, etc.) and other pertinent issues. Do not remove the coupons from the booklet when you receive them as these are to be removed only when redeeming them at assorted venues in presence of staff at time of use. The booklet is easy to tote around and is alphabetized by property for easy use. All coupons are redeemable through December 2009.

- American Casino Guide (ACG) by Steve Bourie; If you gamble (in or outside Las Vegas) this is a decent coupon source (it includes coupons for activities other than gambling, too). This annually published gaming guide and coupon source has been around for years. I recently found an exceptional purchase price on this source at the Discount Book Sale website (link on the blog) for less than $8.00. The guide is also available at the American Casino Guide website ($12.95 )which also offers a Vegas Values Report section that provides weekly updated Vegas casino - hotel promotions and discounts information. Within each purchased ACG in the coupon section, there is a proof of purchase card that should be removed and presented at each redemption locale in Las Vegas. You can remove the assorted applicable Vegas coupons from the book but you'll need the ID card for valid redemption. Place this ACG card in a safe locale because you'll need it to redeem the coupons. Check the ACG website for potential changes in coupon conditions throughout the year's use of available coupons (most coupons are redeemable until late December, 2009).

- Casino Perks; There are coupon book options here for separate dining, show, attraction, gambling packages or the complete deluxe version coupon booklet (which costs $49.95 plus shipping). It's an OK source but many of the coupons are available for free from other previously mentioned sources plus there aren't many gambling coupons. Coupons (valid for a year's time) are to be removed only at time of redemption.

- Las Vegas Entertainment Discount Book; For $16.95 you can order this somewhat offbeat coupon source. It doesn't offer many Las Vegas strip coupons and virtually no gambling coupons that I could locate. Some attraction coupons might render it worthwhile for some or for those who like to dine off-strip. Check coupon expiration dates prior to purchasing as some of the coupons appear outdated.

- eBay coupons; eBay offers lots of Vegas coupons up for bid. You'll find the good, mediocre, and questionable here. Check all sources and verify specifically what you'll be receiving prior to purchase. On perusal of the available coupons here, many are available for free but at least they're all in one place.

There is real cost-savings associated with coupon use in Las Vegas. Acquiring, organizing, and redeeming the coupons does involve some time, effort, and a modest investment for the better value bulk coupons. I calculated that coupon use (many blackjack matchplay coupons and dining 2 for 1 discounts particularly) saved / earned us about $600.00 on our most recent 9-day trip. We obviously redeemed a thick stack of coupons but the results were more than worth it from our perspective.

Cheers..
Charles Higgins

Real Ways To Save Money In Tough Times - Article

*******************************
In this economy it is getting harder and harder for some families to make ends meet. There are articles galore on how to survive the economy, but many of those aren't for people that are really in trouble. If you've had to take a different, lower-paying job, or if you were used to living on two incomes and you are now living on just one, or if higher prices are just sucking you dry, then you aren't concerned about stock portfolios, you just want to survive every day. And you might not know how you can do such LITTLE THINGS to save BIG.

There are a lot of things that real families, in real trouble can do to pinch a penny and it will not hurt a bit. Save on Your Utilities, Cable and Phone Services We've all heard this one before, but I am going to mention it, because it is important. Raise your thermostat a few degrees in the summer and lower it in the winter. This can really add up to a lot of savings over a year's time! If you have a home phone, plus cell phones, ditch the home phone. You are paying a bill that has become completely unnecessary. And if you have astronomical cell phone bills due to overages, then consider a prepaid service. Prepaid isn't what it once was. It is much better and smarter now. Most companies have some excellent prepaid plans that have unlimited options in regards to text messaging, nights and weekends, mobile to mobile, and other unlimited features. Of course with these plans you don't usually get roll-over minutes, but you don't get ANY surprises when it is time to pay the bill each month either. If you have Cricket service in your area, then check that one out first. It is perfect for teens! If you don't have a water-saving shower head on the shower, then invest in one. If you don't have the money to invest in one (and many people just don't right now), you can still save a ton of money by turning the water on only half way when you shower (or at the sink when you wash your hands). There is no reason to have the faucet going "full blast". You can get just as clean on half the water. You are literally letting your money go down the drain. And never leave the water running while brushing your teeth. It actually takes more water to fill a tub for a bath than it does to take a short shower. But don't take hot showers. Very hot water dries your skin out anyway, and it uses way more energy.

Take lukewarm showers and use a kitchen timer, especially for the kids. If you want to be really frugal, turn the shower on and wet yourself down, turn it off and soap up, shampoo, shave, etc., then turn it back on and rinse off. If you don't have a water-saving toilet, and again, if you have no money to invest in one, you can still save water with every flush. Take a 16-32 oz shampoo bottle and fill it with gravel, sand or water and put it in the back of the toilet tank. This will make the toilet "think" the tank is full and it will stop running more quickly and you will use less with each flush. Try flushing after placing it in the tank and if there isn't enough water to flush properly, simply remove a little of the sand from the bottle and place it back in the tank. Keep emptying it a bit at a time until you have enough water to make the toilet flush completely.

Run the clothes washer and dishwasher only when full and on the shortest possible cycles. If your clothing or dishes aren't heavily soiled there is no need to run either machine on a full cycle. And never wash any clothes in hot water. Warm will work just fine for heavy soil, and for anything else use only cold water. And ALWAYS rinse in cold. Never use heat dry on the dishwasher. Once the rinse cycle is finished, prop the door open with a plastic tumbler or bowl to let the steam escape and dry the dishes. Add 1/2 to 1 cup cheap baking soda to your washing machine and use 1/2 the detergent. Check your clothes in the dryer half way or ¾ of the way through the drying cycle. You may be able to use much less time than you currently do. You should also have an "automatic" cycle on your dryer that will run only until clothes are dry, also cutting down on the length of time that the dryer is running.

If you don't have any family members that suffer from allergies, hang your clothes out on a clothesline; especially sheets, blankets, rugs, cloth diapers, etc. Not only will you save money, but they will smell wonderful when you remove them from the line! Drop your cable service to just basic and your cable internet to the slowest speed. Even the slowest broadband is just as good as or even better than what most people need on a daily basis. If you must have your movies, either borrow from the library or use a mail service such as Netflix. We have Netflix and we LOVE it. Not only do you get movies shipped to your door, they have over 14,000 of them that you can watch online FREE, as part of your already paid service. I can't say enough good things about it! And the best part, no late charges when you forget to return a movie!

Pay your utilities, cable and rent on time. I know that one can be tough, but if you will look closely at your bills, most charge late fees of $10, $25 or even more when they are late. Do your best to get on track and stay on track and you could save yourself several hundred dollars a year! TURN IT OFF! I have walked through my house and found three of our televisions all on, all on the same channel, and only one of them being watched! If you are watching the same thing, do it in the same room. And when you aren't watching, turn it off. Turn off thing such as printers, computers, CD and DVD players, or any electronic item you are not using. Don't leave your cell phone plugged in after it tells you that the phone is charged. And, ALWAYS turn off lights and lamps when you are not in the room! Use nightlights on sensors so that they go off during the day on their own and come on when it gets dark.

If you or your kids must have the TV on to fall asleep, always use the timer so that it will shut off after you have fallen asleep. Save When You Spend Don't buy refills for your foaming hand soap bottles when you can make it yourself. Save the bottles, then buy regular store-brand liquid soap, place 2 tablespoons in the bottle, fill the rest with water and shake it up. This is a great way to get your kids to use much less body wash in the bath too! Just save your foaming bottles and use their liquid body wash in place of the liquid soap.

Buy store brand products whenever possible. Many things such as sugars (granulated, powdered and brown), cooking oil, flour, corn meal, baking soda, baking powder, tomato sauce, salt, pepper, spices, noodles, cream soups for cooking, and many, many other items are just a waste of money at name brand prices. Skip the brand-name boxed cereals and get the bagged cereals (which are still name brand). My kids liked them better anyway and the price difference is amazing. When you do insist on a name brand, visit the website of the brand and sign up for money saving offers and coupons. Canned vegetables tend to be cheaper AND healthier than frozen or even fresh because they are cooked right in the can. All of the vitamins stay in the vegetables rather than being boiled or baked out of them.

You will save a lot of money on meat if you use them in soups, stews and casseroles, rather than cooking and serving each family member an entire steak, for example. Use half the steak, and make beef and noodles with off brand noodles and brown gravy mix. Scour the internet for other great recipes, tips and ideas. If you have the time and inclination, learn to cook in bulk and freeze the meals. Buy off-brand lawn and leaf bags, instead of name brand garbage bags. Lawn and leaf bags tend to be higher density and the cheap lawn and leaf bags are usually as good as the name brand trash bags. Better yet, if your city is like ours and offers single-sort recycling, take full advantage of it! You will use fewer trash bags and do something so good for the environment! If your city doesn't have a recycling program, try to get them to start one. I put out 2 to 3 times as many recyclables as I do trash because of our program. That saves me on the bags, and I am doing my part for the environment. Keep your plastic bags from the grocery store and use them as trash can liners in your small trash cans, or to put wet towels and swimsuits in when you go to the pool or beach. They have a ton of uses if you use your imagination. Keep your kids entertained this summer by getting them library cards and taking advantage of the summer programs they provide. Some cities also have "free movies in the park" nights. Ask your local chamber of commerce if your city does that and see if you can get a schedule.
****************************

When you buy clothing, buy wash and wear ONLY. It doesn't matter how much it is marked down, it is NOT a bargain if it has to be dry cleaned or takes an hour to iron it! For your kids, in the summer, at many places, such as Walmart, you can buy mix and match poly-cotton shorts and tops for as little as $2.50 to $3 each. You can get an entire outfit for $5-$6. Better still, when your child has a birthday, limit the toys and have everyone give them clothing as gifts. My great-nieces love to get clothes as gifts and I can buy them several of the mix and match outfits and it is a big help to my niece and her husband when it comes to clothing her kids. With all the kid's gadgets and games these days, invest in rechargeable batteries in all sizes. The cost is not that much more in the initial investment and it will save a ton of money in the long run this summer and from now on! Use your hair conditioner for shaving cream. I started doing this to alleviate my dry skin, and it not only works great for that, it is a cheap shaving cream. Buy a cheap off brand and use it just for shaving.

Stop eating out completely and take your own coffee and lunch to work. A cup or thermos of coffee from home with some flavored creamer is much cheaper that buying Starbucks on the way to work, and a sandwich brought from home can save you $50 a week or more! You could buy a week's worth of groceries for your family for what you are spending on eating out for lunch! I do believe for the most part that you get what you pay for, so when you have to make an important large purchase, research all options and don't necessarily go for the cheapest every time because you may get something that you will have to replace in no time. Make sure you are spending wisely by doing your homework first and finding the best price on the best quality you can afford.

Finding Money When You Need It Now If you need extra cash now, clear out the closets and garage and have a garage sale. Ask the neighbors to have one the same weekend and you will all benefit from having more customers. List large items on Craigslist! It is free to list on there! You never know until you try, and it will not cost you anything. You might have something sitting in a closet collecting dust that someone is willing to pay you for today!

Never underestimate the old fashioned "change jar". Every time you pay with cash and get change, bring it home and toss it in a jelly jar. When it is full, take it to the nearest Coinstar. You will be amazed at how much money all those pennies and nickels will add up to. Use the money to buy something you have really been needing for which you didn't have the money, to buy groceries, or to reward yourself just for saving it! And don't forget to check the couch cushions, the bottom of the washing machine or your purses and check your jeans and coat pockets!

If you aren't afraid of needles, sign up to sell your blood or plasma. Do an internet search for your closest bank to find out what they require, then give an hour or two of your time and get paid for it. You won't get rich, but you could make gas or grocery money when you have none and help save lives at the same time! The Bottom Line If you are having a really hard time making it, then implementing these changes now can make a big difference for you. Even if you aren't in a financial bind, you can make many of these changes to save a lot of money and you will have a great sense of accomplishment once you start seeing the difference it can and will make and the resources you can save!

How To Save Money On Food Article

How to Save Money on Food - Tips to Keep Your Produce Fresh

Author: Theresa Kruger

How do you save money on food? There's nothing more frustrating than opening up your fridge and seeing all that expensive produce rotting in the fridge drawer. If you're tired of throwing away moldy and rotten produce there are a few simple things you can do to prolong its freshness.

Our fridge temperature is probably one of the last things that's ever on our mind. The temperature inside your fridge should be between 32F and 41F. If it's too warm, food won't be chilled correctly and bacteria will start to multiply. While if its too cold, ice particles will form within the food.

Avoid storing fresh produce in the plastic packaging in which it's sold. Air should circulate around fruit and vegetables to prevent them from sweating and becoming soggy.

Potatoes: Stop potatoes from sprouting by storing them in a cool, dry place with a few apples. If you've peeled too many or have peeled them in preparation for cooking, put them in a bowl. Then cover them with water, and place the bowl in the fridge.

Lettuce: This is one exception to the no-plastic rule because it seems to thrive if it's kept loose in a large plastic bag in the fridge. A good way to revive limp lettuce is to slice off a sliver of the stem and place the lettuce in a bowl of cold water. Individual leaves can be revived if you sprinkle them with cold water, wrap them in a tea towel and pop them in the fridge for an hour or so.

Carrots, beetroots and turnips: Cut off any green, leafy tops because these will continue to draw nutrients from the roots. Like all root vegetables, carrots will last longer if they're kept in a cold, dry, dark place with good ventilation.

Lemons: After you've cut a lemon in half, place the halves cut side down on a saucer. Then cover them with an inverted glass and store them in a cool place.

Celery: Celery starts to lose its flavor as soon as it's washed. The best way to store a piece of celery is to stand the stalk upright in a glass of water before placing it in the fridge.

Mushrooms: Store mushrooms in a cool, dark place, but not the fridge. I find that they last longer if they are wiped dry and laid on a piece of paper towel.

Onions: Onions are easy to store. Just put them into a vegetable basket or wire rack. The trick to preventing them from rotting is to keep the bulbs apart so that air can circulate around them.

Tomatoes: Some people like their tomatoes rock hard, while others prefer them soft. Green tomatoes, along with any that haven't fully ripened, are best stored in a dark place. Exposing them to sunlight simply makes them soft not ripe. To ripen them, place them either in a brown paper bag with an apple or in a drawer, stalk side up, and leave them until they've turned rosy red.

Apples: Remove unblemished apples to prevent them from contaminating the others with their rot.

Saving money on food is more important than ever before, especially with produce prices at all time highs. Why not give these tips a try? Over the course of a year you'll be surprised at how much you'll actually save on your grocery bill.
